The world largest game reserve “Selous Game Reserve” is located in Tanzania along the Rufiji River basin. Selous game reserve possesses a diverse landscape from hot volcanic springs, sporadic lakes, channels from the Great Ruaha and Rufiji rivers. The Rufiji River, with its lagoons, sandbanks and lakes, and the surrounding forests and woodlands that make up the Selous create a very unique and unusual safari environment. Total area for Selous Game Reserve is 50,000 square km which is greater than the size of Switzerland. This vast wildlife land is used for both photographic and trophic hunting.
Wildlife in Selous Selous is the home to a range of big game including buffalo – the largest population in Africa; Nyasaland gnu; brindled gnu; hartebeest; Greater Kudu; sable antelope; eland; reedbuck; bushbuck; waterbuck; warthog; zebras; giraffe; and wildebeest. Safaris in the Selous are famous for the elephant, hippopotamus and rhino (although now few remain) populations. Also: lion, leopard, the spotted hyena and hunting dog are in abundance; cheetah are rare; there are over 350 species of bird and reptiles such as crocodiles and various snakes and lizards. There are many elephants, lions, zebras, and other wildlife in the reserve.
How to Get There
A Selous holidays is best organized by flying from Dar es Salaam - all safari camps have an airstrip for light aircraft so you can reach your lodge easily.
Take a cable car across Stieglers Gorge (100 metres deep and 100 metres wide); bird watching; photography; walking safaris; and fishing Tiger Fish and Vandu (in the rivers of the Kilombero Game Controlled Area to the west of the reserve). Selous safari game viewing, balloon safaris and boating trips on the great Rufiji River are readily arranged.
When to go Accessible year round. Dry season, June-August. Wet season November-March. December- February
Accommodation mainly based in the north of the reserve. Stay in the either the Island Mbuyini luxury tented camp, the Sand River Lodge, the Selous Safari Camp, or the Rufiji River Camp. Selous safari drives, boat trips, and walking safaris into the reserve may be made from these safari camps and lodges.
3DAYS/2NIGHTS – SELOUS GAME RESERVE
Day 1: Dar es Salaam /Selous Game Reserve
Morning depart to Selous Game Reserve with picnic lunch, the journey will take 5hours through the most unexplored and untouched areas of Tanzania. Late afternoon, boat safari along the mighty Rufiji River, brings you into close contact with hippo, crocodile and fantastic birdlife. Crocodile glide into the water as your boat approaches and hippo appear in frightening proximity, grunting and blowing steam. Dinner and overnight will be at the Selous Hippo Camp (En Suite).

Day 2: Game Drive in Selous Game Reserve
You will have a full day in the Selous Game Reserve exploration of the reserve by 4 wheel drive vehicle; will permit you to have good photographic opportunities and the chance to explore different sections of vast park. Selous is famous for its elephants, commonly seen are lions, wild dogs, buffaloes, bushbuck, impalas, elands, baboons, zebras and greater kudus. It was originally set aside as a hunting area where animals are abundant but shyer than the Northern Parks. Dinner and overnight will be at the Selous Hippo Camp (En Suite).

Day 3: Walking Safari/ Back to Dar es Salaam
Morning after breakfast, walking safari. Walking safari will give you a particularly intimate feel for the African wilds. It starts in the morning with a guidance of an armed ranger, takes 2 hours and offers a good chance of seeing giraffe, zebra, warthogs and good birding, after walking meet with your vehicle and drive back to Dar es Salaam, where you will arrive late afternoon and drop off at the hotel.
